The Strangers of New Valhalla: Preview Article 5 - Neko Jita...

Rise and shine, Rulers! Today’s spoilers features another Super Rare and that means it’s article time! Today we are looking at some support for the Kouga faction! Without further ado, let’s get into it!

To start things off, we have Rikyu, Cat Tongued Tea Master. Rikyu is a master of tea ceremony and a wanderer, visiting Kouga from a different world. What he holds in his hand is a tea mixing whisk, and on his back is a container for tea leaves. Rikyu is based off the real life figure Sen no Rikyū who laid the foundation for modern tea ceremony. As for the meaning of Rikyu’s title and both cards’ flavor, it is necessary to understand the phrase “cat tongued”. In Japanese, this phrase is used to describe someone who is incapable of handling hot drinks, in the same way a cat can’t. Ironic, is it not?

Getting into the cards themselves, Rikyu is a 5 cost 1100/1200 that can bring a 3 cost or lower card (such as Bunbuku!) into play. His tea counters generate surprisingly quickly, especially considering the fact that quite a few Ninja Cat resonators have the ability to produce extra resonator tokens, adding further counters to Rikyu.

As for Table Flip, man! What a Master Rune! While Hanzo likely has a more effective Master Rune for the rune deck in Sealing Scroll, Table Flip looks like it’ll be a strong addition to the main deck for Hanzo. A two-for-one spell, able to stop a source of damage and then potentially remove or return it!

Our last two cards for this preview are Bunbuku, The Legendary Tea Kettle and The Six Jizo Statues. Bunbuku is Rikyu’s partner and friend, a shapeshifting tanuki (racoon dog) that can change shape into anything, whether it be a tea kettle or an enormous beast resonator (one of which will be spoiled later!). Bunbuku is based off a classic Japanese mythology character named Bunbuku Chagama, said to shapeshift for those who help save him.

As for The Six Jizo Statues, this card is simply based off the Buddhist traveller guardian statues called Jizo seen all across Japan. These statues in particularly seem to have a debt to repay, and mobilize for the player as a 1200/1200 after six turns (and keep getting bigger!!).

That’s all for today! Check in next time for more spoilers from The Strangers of New Valhalla, on sale January 18th, 2019!
